BSE - bovine spongiform encephalopathy

Classical BSE (bovine spongiforme encephalopathy) has never been detected in Norway. In 2015, however, a case of atypical BSE (H-variant) was diagnosed.

The aim of the surveillance programme is to document freedom of classical BSE in the Norwegian cattle population.

Brain samples from 7,103 bovine animals from 3,196 different dairy herds and 945 beef cattle herds were submitted for examination in the surveillance and control programme for BSE in Norway 2020. All the 6,691 tested brain samples were negative for BSE.
