BSE - bovine spongiform encephalopathy

Classical BSE (bovine spongiforme encephalopathy) has never been detected in Norway. In 2015, however, a case of atypical BSE (H-variant) was diagnosed.

The aim of the surveillance programme is to document freedom of classical BSE in the Norwegian cattle population.

Brain samples from 6496 bovine animals from 2,849 different dairy herds and 1,381 beef cattle herds were submitted for examination in the surveillance and control programme for BSE in Norway 2018. All the 6327 tested brain samples were negative for BSE.
