BSE - bovine spongiform encephalopathy

Classical BSE (bovine spongiforme encephalopathy) has never been detected in Norway. In 2015, however, a case of atypical BSE (H-variant) was diagnosed.

The aim of the surveillance programme is to document freedom of classical BSE in the Norwegian cattle population.

Brain samples from 6,959 bovine animals from 2,486 different dairy herds and 1,828 beef cattle herds were submitted for examination in the surveillance and control programme for BSE in Norway 2017. All the 6,816 tested brain samples were negative for BSE.
